About Us

ABOUT  US

We welcome all to join us

The Maetreum is open to all regardless of gender, gender identity, race, ethnic background or sexual orientation.  Our theology starts from the simplest basis:  That the Divine Feminine principle is the basis of the universe.  That all of us, all that we encounter is Her in the aggregate.  We are all the Great Mother learning about Herself.  From this simple beginning springs our organizational models, our rituals, the principles of what we call Wholistic Feminism, our mission of charitable outreach and indeed the way we, as Cybelines, live our lives.  We are sometimes called the "scholarly Cybelines" because we have invested many years of strict historical research in order to embrace the essence of what proved to be literally the oldest surviving religion in the world.  We embraced the essence and then stepped away from "Pagan Reconstructism" by bringing those essences into the modern world.  We re-introduced to the world a model for Pagan Monasticism.  We've recovered long believed lost principles, our drumming patterns, ritual practices and corrected history.  The world centre of our Religion is in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York at the foot of the Kaaterskill Clove.  Unlike many neo-Pagan groups, we have a "horizontal" organization, our Priestesses all considered equals but also expected to live our religion, dedicate themselves to a live of charitable works and ministry to others according to their strengths.  We welcome all to our services and to visit our first Phrygianum of the modern era.  We do not require anyone to renounce anything to join us.

Who We Are

We are a reclaiming of the ancient Mother Goddess tradition with a focus on Cybele.  Established in 1998 with public rituals held at the Serpent Mound in south central Ohio we moved to New York in 2002 with the purchase of an ageing Silver age Catskill resort inn.  We incorporated in 2005 with the formal dedication of the Phrygianum property and transfer of the deed to the corporation.  We are a 501(c)3 church and religious charity under the IRS regulations.

What We Have Accomplished

Originally our property was purchased to provide a place for newly transitioned transsexual women to bootstrap their lives. That quickly changed in include all women.  Over the years we have housed and supported more than forty women and children in need and done so with only our own meager resources.

After we incorporated we found ourselves in a legal battle for recognition as a legitimate church with the Town of Catskill despite being incorporated, our property deeded in the name of the corporation, recognized as a church by the State of New York and an IRS 501(c)3 church and religious charity.  That court battle went on eight long years and in the end we set a legal precedence protecting the rights of all minority religious groups that is now cited around the US.

One of our priestesses earned her doctorate in Goddess Thealogy, the first to the best of our knowledge.   Additionally we have made major contributions to the understanding of ancient history, recovered the lost drumming pattern of the Cybelines and built the first Temple of Cybele in the known world in 1600 years.

After we won our court case we applied for and were granted a low powered (100 watt) FM radio license and set up WLPP-LP here at the Maetreum.  We are a non commercial community radio station and a proud Pacifica Radio Network affiliate with some of our programming heard around the US on the Pacifica network.  We are also the nation's first and still only Pagan owned and operated
FM radio station.

All in all not back for a bunch of Pagan women with limited resources, with your help who knows what the future will hold.
